I do my best Tom Hanks impression -- and find Times Square taco heaven.

Day four in this city was a whirlwind. A car with a giant inflatable rat peering out the sun roof drove by me on the walk from the subway to the Times building, which was certainly a way to start the day. I’m still getting used to people taking pictures in front of my office every time I head in.

I heard from more Times staffers today, including the standards editor, PR person, social media guru, and resident tech whiz. I’m having lunch with a member of my flex editing desk tomorrow, which I’m looking forward to.

In other news, I came agonizingly close to winning a Broadway lottery today – I made it on the standby list for “Tootsie” with Santino Fontana and Lilli Cooper. This means that if a lottery winner doesn’t claim their ticket, it falls to me. Sadly, no balkers today. Oh, well – I have to win one of these eventually, right?

After work, I walked around midtown Manhattan for a few hours.

I checked out the TKTS booth 20 minutes before tonight’s curtain time, but it’s disappointing compared to its London equivalent in Leicester Square. Generally TKTS tickets are half off the sticker price, but London’s booth does DEEP discounts, as in me sitting five rows from the front for $20 at a Michael Crawford play deep. None of the Broadway plays or musicals were under $58 per ticket, and that’s for seats at the rear of the house.

From TKTS, I popped across Times Square to the Disney Store, where I wandered through Toy Story 4 and Mickey-as-the-Statue-of-Liberty-lined displays. I also checked out M&M World and Hershey’s Chocolate World.

The latter had Hershey’s bar door handles and several in-store s’mores, fudge, and ice cream cafes, which smelled lovely.

At this point, I found Times Square taco heaven, also known as Los Tacos No. 1. It’s a taco shop that reminds me of The Tamale Place on Rockville Road in Indy.

There are no seats – just counters – and the line is pretty much always out the door. One leg up over The Tamale Place is that they have a sauce bar with tomato salsa, medium and spicy sauces, and straight-up chili peppers. It’s basically a “spice your own taco” station.

The “pollo asado”/chicken taco itself was delicious, with just the right amount of guacamole (no one likes a guacamole glob taco). Since it’s so close to the Times office, street taco snack hour may become a thing.

Then I headed down to Radio City Music Hall (where James Corden will host the Tony Awards on Sunday) and Rockefeller Center.

I walked by the NBC Studios where Lester Holt tapes NBC Nightly News during the week (Rockefeller Center offers tours during the day, so I may see if I can make one of those at some point).

I also dropped by the F.A.O. Schwarz toy store and did my best Tom Hanks impression on the giant, musical piano.

Barbies, Power Rangers, and Statue of Liberty bears abound.

And I ventured inside the Times Square Victoria’s Secret, which was surprisingly not much different from a regular Victoria’s Secret (not even any NYC-themed merch? Weird).

I headed up Fifth Avenue to Tiffany’s, and then Trump Tower (yes, I rode the escalator). The inside is gleaming gold, and an enormous American flag hangs in the atrium. You’re surrounded by the Trump Grill, Trump Ice Cream, Trump Gift Shop …

On my way back to the Times building to grab my stuff before heading back to my apartment for a mandatory resident meeting (which I conveniently remembered an hour beforehand), I came across a dance party in Bryant Park. The group was OneUp, who competed on “The Voice” in 2018 before being eliminated by Kelly Clarkson. So that was cool!

I also found my go-to cheap souvenir place near the Times office this afternoon: It’s called Jacks, and its motto is “now more than just a 99 cent store!” I grabbed this cool mug for $4 and a mini commemorative one for my desk for $3. I’d be afraid to tell you how much people were hawking those for in Times Square.

I’m trying for Shakespeare in the Park tickets tomorrow for “Much Ado About Nothing.” Fingers crossed – they’re free, but they distribute a limited number and you have to enter a daily lottery.

On a final note, I’m now hearing the subway whine in my sleep. Already?!
