I work for The New York Times. And I have the fancy pen to prove it.

I woke up this morning unemployed. I’ll go to sleep as a multi-platform editing fellow at The New York Times. Can’t beat that!

Today was my first day of a five-day orientation program that includes, among other highlights, a tour of the newsroom today, lunch with Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger tomorrow, and a chat with Dean Baquet on Friday. But, first swag.

All the swag.

So much swag.

I came home with a T-shirt, bag, water bottle, button, copies of the Sunday magazine and Monday paper, a bamboo utensil set, reusable straws, an extraordinarily fancy pen, and more. And I get 20 percent off at the NYT store, should I ever feel the need to acquire MORE swag.

And check out the view! (Sadly, the NYT building does not have a roof deck or outdoor patio. I asked.)

The past day or two has been overwhelming between a new city, new apartment, new job, new laptop, and the world’s biggest barrage of emails, but I’m starting to settle in. I even gave someone directions on the subway this morning. Win!

I’m still sorting through everything, but I’m jealous of the inaugural class of fellows who get to work in the newsroom for an entire year (we’re going through orientation together). The NYT did away with its former 10-week summer reporting fellowships apart from the three Dow Jones Media Fund fellows for, in part, that very reason: 10 weeks is too short a time (actually nine, minus orientation week). By the time I know what I’m doing, it’ll be time to leave! But that doesn’t mean I can’t make the most of them while I’m here.

So, orientation. The next five days are packed, but with great things. Today was all about adding Slack channels, learning about the Times CMS, setting up my new laptop with all the NYT tech, touring the newsroom, meeting my editor, and getting a locker (because I’m on the flexible editing desk, I don’t actually have a desk of my own. I have a designated area, but I share with others as we rotate shifts.) My desk has been described as the SWAT team for the rest of the newsroom’s editing needs, and I’m ready to dive in! It’s entirely digital-focused, which plays to my strengths.

The highlight of my newsroom tour was seeing the famous red staircases, which got even better when I learned I’ll be sitting next to the leftmost one, next to some very high-profile masthead editors, I’m told (gulp).

Another fun thing about working at The Times: Famous people just are casually in the building on a regular basis. I passed New Jersey Senator Cory Booker in the hallway today on the way to an interview. And it’s not just the NYT, but the whole city. One of the other editing fellows came across Lin-Manuel Miranda and his son in Central Park yesterday!

I’ll wrap with the highlight of today for me: “You are now colleagues with Maggie Haberman,” we were told. No kidding.

I hit my desk Monday, June 10. I can’t wait!

(Bonus: Check out this gorgeous sunset I witnessed while walking along the Hudson River Trail in Chelsea this evening. It really was a miracle on the Hudson!)
