Peeping Manhattan from Brooklyn Heights, Eating my First Oyster, and Snarfing Cheesy Peach Ice Cream

Two highlights today at work: 1) Hearing from Wesley Morris, a New York Times critic-at-large (you might know him as the guy who mainlined "Game of Thrones" in five weeks after ignoring it for eight years), and 2) Editing the Monday Evening Briefing newsletter. I’ve only been getting the New York Times Morning and Evening Briefings in my inbox for, umm, YEARS, so it was a surreal moment to get tonight’s and be like “Hey, I wrote/changed that line!” My job rocks.

Here’s a fun landmark I came across today: The original Shake Shack in Madison Square Park.

I will clearly need to visit at some point, but I was just passing by for now.

In other news, I learned today that Judy Chicago’s “Dinner Party” artwork is chilling at the Brooklyn Museum, which I will also need to introduce myself to.

Tonight I headed to DUMBO in Brooklyn to sample some eclectic offerings at the Time Out Market.

First up: My first oyster experience.

It reminded me of a mushroom – like pretty much all seafood I’ve ever tasted (with the big exception of catfish), I liked it (but not as much as I love crab and lobster). Today’s oysters came from Copps Island in Connecticut. The best part might've been the stall's name: Fish Cheeks.

I also had this yummy “Cheesy” peach ice cream with cheddar cheese crisps from Ice & Vice, a craft ice cream place.

Peaches and cheese go surprisingly well together. I also considered the “Rum Raisin” (salted caramel sorbet + rum raisin) and “Flaming” flavors (ghost pepper + strawberry mole sauce). Their menu changes seasonally, so ice cream there is always an adventure!

From DUMBO, I walked up the hill to the Brooklyn Heights promenade to take in a gorgeous view of Manhattan just as the sun was beginning to set.

It’s like the Idle in Indy, but on a much grander scale.

Also, peep the Statue of Liberty in the distance.

Oh, something else tasty I ate recently and forgot to mention: Bibimbap! My affection for this Korean dish is a recent fixation, spawned during my week at Temple University.

This bibimbap came from Bowllin’ on Waverly Place, and features kimchi, seaweed, bulgogi, white rice (hidden underneath the veggie pile), soybean sprouts, lettuce, beef, a sunny-side up egg, and K-chili sauce.

My one from the Korea House food truck at Temple was much better (particularly the seaweed), but this one was still quality, though it was kind of expensive, so I won’t be back.

Only two more days until I see “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child!”
